Data recovery in Florida

Florida's data loss stories tend to follow its geography. In Miami, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Pembroke Pines, it is international trade, finance, real estate, and a large creative and hospitality workforce running on laptops and phones. Orlando's tourism, simulation, and aerospace-related work produces big project files, and Tampa and St. Petersburg add healthcare, finance, and military personnel tied to MacDill Air Force Base. Jacksonville combines logistics, a busy port, and naval installations, while Tallahassee is the seat of state government and home to large public universities.

Fast-growing cities such as Port St. Lucie and Cape Coral are full of home offices, small contractors, and retirees with decades of family photos on aging external drives. Wherever you are, the process is the same. ClearQuote is a nationwide mail-in service with no office in Florida: you confirm your case online, print the free prepaid label we email you, and drop the package at any carrier location. That matters after a storm, when local repair shops may be closed. A single device is a flat $1,200, and you pay only if your data is recovered.

What puts data at risk in Florida

Hurricanes are the obvious statewide risk, and the damage they do to devices comes from several directions: storm surge and flooding, roof leaks, long outages, and the surges when power returns. Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Michael in the Panhandle in 2018, Hurricane Ian in Southwest Florida in 2022, and Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024 all showed how widespread that damage can be. Before a storm, back up to the cloud or to a drive you take with you, unplug desktops and NAS units, and move equipment off the floor and away from windows.

Between storms, Florida's everyday conditions are just as hard on electronics. High humidity and salt air along the coasts corrode connectors and circuit boards, especially in homes that are closed up without air conditioning. Central Florida sees some of the most frequent lightning in the country, and nearby strikes can send surges through power and network cables. Summer flooding in low-lying streets is common in South Florida even without a named storm. Use surge protection on both power and network lines, keep drives in conditioned rooms, and store a backup off-site.

Florida data recovery — common questions

We evacuated for a hurricane and came back to a flooded house. Should we try to dry out our computers first?+
No. Do not power them on, and do not use heat or a hair dryer. Salt or brackish floodwater corrodes circuit boards quickly once a device starts drying. Put each drive or laptop in a sealed plastic bag and confirm your case online so it can be evaluated as soon as possible.
Can a lightning strike near my house really damage a hard drive?+
Yes. A nearby strike can push a surge through power, cable, or network lines and damage a drive's circuit board or a computer's power supply. The data on the platters is usually still intact, but do not swap in a board from another drive, because modern boards hold calibration data unique to each drive.
Our business lost a server after a storm and needs data back quickly. Is that possible?+
Expedited and emergency service are available on request. Servers and RAID arrays are custom-quoted after a free evaluation, and we will tell you what is realistic before any work begins. Note the drive order before removing anything.
