Helium-sealed drives

Helium Ultrastar drives use a sealed enclosure instead of a breather hole. They can still be opened and repaired in a cleanroom, but they need a lab experienced with sealed designs.

Drives pulled from arrays

Ultrastar and Deskstar NAS drives usually come from multi-drive arrays. Label each drive’s slot before removing it — the order matters for reconstructing the RAID, which is a custom-quoted job.

Gradual media wear

HGST drives have historically posted some of the lower failure rates in Backblaze’s published data, but long-running drives still wear out — usually with growing bad sectors before outright failure.

Can you recover an encrypted or password-protected HGST drive?+
Often yes, but you'll need the password or encryption key. Many HGST drives use hardware encryption, so a physical recovery only yields readable data when the correct credentials are supplied — have them ready.
