A Seagate drive inside

Most LaCie portables contain Seagate 2.5" drives, so they share Seagate’s failure patterns — head damage after drops, and firmware faults that stop the drive from being detected.

Mac formats on Windows

LaCie drives are often formatted APFS or HFS+ for Mac. Connected to a Windows PC, they appear as RAW or ask to be formatted — the data is fine. Don’t format; connect to a Mac.

Rugged doesn’t mean drop-proof while running

The bumper protects the case, but a drive dropped while spinning can still suffer head damage. If a Rugged drive clicks or beeps after a fall, unplug it.

Multi-bay RAID units

2big, 6big, and 12big units stripe or mirror data across drives. Recovery means reconstructing the RAID — a custom-quoted RAID job, not the single-device flat rate.

Can you recover an encrypted or password-protected LaCie drive?+

Often yes, but you'll need the password or encryption key. Many LaCie drives use hardware encryption, so a physical recovery only yields readable data when the correct credentials are supplied — have them ready.

My LaCie drive isn't recognized — is the data still there?+

Usually. A drive that isn't detected most often has a controller, firmware, or mechanical fault while the data itself sits intact. Stop using it, don't reformat, and let our cleanroom recover it.

Do I have to visit a location?+
