MacBook Won't Turn On? How to Recover Your Files
A MacBook that won’t power on is alarming, but the files are often fine — the problem is frequently the machine, not the data. Here’s how to work through it, plus the one modern-Mac catch that catches everyone off guard.
Rule out power and display issues
A “dead” MacBook is sometimes just not charging or not showing a picture:
- Charge it for 30+ minutes on a known-good Apple charger and cable, watching for any light or sound.
- Check the screen isn’t the culprit — listen for the startup chime or fans, and look for a very dim backlight in a dark room. A working Mac with a dead display looks “off.”
- Reset the SMC / try a forced power cycle. On modern MacBooks, hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, then press it again. On Apple Silicon, a full shutdown and restart can clear a hang.
- Try booting to Recovery (Apple Silicon: hold the power button until “Loading startup options”; Intel: hold Command-R). If it reaches Recovery, the hardware largely works and it’s likely a software/macOS problem — your files are probably intact.
If it boots at all, back up immediately to an external drive or iCloud before doing anything else.
The catch: FileVault and the T2 / Apple Silicon chip
This is the part that surprises people. Modern Macs (T2-equipped Intel models and all Apple Silicon) store your data encrypted by a chip soldered to the logic board, and the SSD is often not a removable part at all.
What that means for recovery:
- If the logic board dies, the encryption keys can die with it — even a physically intact SSD may be unreadable, because the data is meaningless without that specific chip.
- If FileVault is on (and it often is by default), you also need your login password or recovery key. Locate it now.
The practical takeaways: keep a backup (Time Machine or cloud), because a dead board is far harder to recover than a dead hard drive of old — and know your password and FileVault recovery key.
Older MacBooks are more forgiving
Pre-2018 Intel MacBooks with removable SATA or NVMe drives are much easier: if the machine is dead but the drive is healthy, the drive can often be read directly to recover your files (subject to FileVault credentials if it was enabled).
What not to do
- Don’t reinstall macOS or erase the disk trying to “fix” boot problems if your files aren’t backed up — that can wipe them.
- Don’t attempt a DIY logic-board or drive repair on a soldered-SSD Mac; without cleanroom tools and board-level skill, you risk the one component holding your data.

Depending on the model, a lab either reads a removable drive directly, or — on soldered/encrypted Macs — repairs the logic board enough to bring the machine up and offload the data through its own chip, using your credentials. It’s more involved than a classic hard drive, which is exactly why credentials and backups matter so much.
