Black Screen on Windows? How to Fix It Before or After Login

Updated October 3, 2026 •6 min read

A blank black screen on a Windows PC can mean anything from a display driver that crashed to a hard drive on its way out. The key is to work out when it goes black. Before Windows loads, after you sign in, or with just a mouse cursor on screen? Each one points to different causes. Here’s how to fix a Windows black screen in order, from simple keyboard shortcuts to Safe Mode, and how to recognize when the real problem is a failing drive.

Check the basics first

Before changing anything in Windows, rule out the simple stuff:

  • Monitor: is it on, and set to the right input (HDMI, DisplayPort)? Reseat the cable at both ends, or try another cable.
  • Desktop PCs: if the monitor is plugged into the motherboard rather than the graphics card (or the other way around), try the other port.
  • Laptops: close the lid, wait a few seconds and open it. Try the brightness keys.
  • Peripherals: unplug everything except the keyboard and mouse, including USB drives and docks, and restart.

If the PC turns on but never shows anything, not even a manufacturer logo, the problem is before Windows starts. See PC turns on but no display.

Fix a blank black screen with keyboard shortcuts

If the PC seems to be running (lights on, fans spinning, maybe sounds), try these before restarting.

Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows restarts the graphics driver. You may hear a beep and see the screen flicker. If the picture comes back, a driver hiccup caused it.

Switch the projection mode

Windows may be sending the picture to a display that isn’t there, such as a TV or projector you used earlier. Press Windows key + P to open the projection menu (which you can’t see), then press the down arrow and Enter. Wait a few seconds. Repeat a few times to cycle through PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only.

Try an external monitor

On a laptop, connect a monitor or TV. If the picture appears there, the laptop is working and the issue is the built-in screen or its settings.

Black screen with only a cursor after login

If you sign in and see a black screen with a mouse pointer, Windows is running but the desktop (File Explorer) didn’t start.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click File > Run new task (on newer Windows 11 versions, Run new task is at the top).
  3. Type explorer.exe and press Enter.

If the desktop appears, restart normally. If it happens every time, a recent update, a startup program or a corrupted user profile may be responsible. Safe Mode (below) helps narrow it down.

You can also press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If that screen appears, Windows is responsive, and you can restart from the power icon in the corner.

Start Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads Windows with basic drivers, which gets around most display driver problems. When you can’t see the screen, you’ll need the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

  1. Get into WinRE. Turn the PC on, and as soon as the Windows logo or spinning dots appear, hold the power button to force it off. Do this twice. On the third start, Windows should show Automatic Repair or Preparing Automatic Repair.
  2. Choose Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 / F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Option 3, Enable low-resolution video, is also worth trying.

If WinRE asks for a BitLocker recovery key, see where to find your BitLocker recovery key. Don’t guess or reset anything until you have it.

Fix the display driver in Safe Mode

If Safe Mode works, the display driver is the prime suspect.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card and choose Properties.
  3. On the Driver tab, click Roll Back Driver if it’s available. This undoes a recent driver update.
  4. If rollback isn’t available, choose Uninstall device and restart normally. Windows installs a basic driver, and you can then install the latest one from your PC or graphics card maker.

If the black screen started right after a Windows update, WinRE also offers Uninstall Updates and System Restore under Troubleshoot > Advanced options. System Restore doesn’t touch your personal files, but it only works if a restore point exists.

When a black screen is really a failing drive

Sometimes the black screen isn’t a display problem at all. Windows is trying to read from a drive that’s failing, and it stalls before the desktop ever draws. Warning signs:

  • Startup has become very slow, with long stretches on a black screen or the spinning dots.
  • You’ve seen disk errors, “Scanning and repairing drive,” or Windows stuck repairing disk errors.
  • Clicking, grinding or beeping from a hard drive, or files that won’t open or copy.
  • Boot errors such as inaccessible boot device.

If that sounds familiar, stop troubleshooting and back up first. Every restart, repair attempt and Safe Mode boot puts more wear on a failing drive. If Windows still loads, even in Safe Mode, copy your most important files to an external drive right away. Our list of hard drive failure warning signs can help you tell.

Avoid running CHKDSK or third-party repair tools on a drive you suspect is failing. They write to the drive and can make recovery harder.

If nothing works

If you’ve tried the shortcuts, Safe Mode and driver fixes and the screen is still black:

  • A Reset this PC or clean reinstall may fix Windows, but back up first. “Keep my files” generally preserves your files, but it’s not a substitute for a backup.
  • The drive can be removed and read from another computer, if it isn’t failing and isn’t encrypted without a key you have.
  • If the drive isn’t detected anywhere, it needs professional recovery, not more attempts.

The bottom line

For a blank black screen on Windows, check the monitor and cables, then try Win + Ctrl + Shift + B and Win + P. For a black screen with a cursor, start explorer.exe from Task Manager. If that fails, use Safe Mode from WinRE and roll back or reinstall the display driver. If the slowdown, disk errors or noises point to a failing drive, stop and back up before anything else.
