Samsung models & families

Samsung is primarily an SSD brand today — its consumer hard drive business was sold to Seagate in 2011:

860 / 870 EVO & QVO

SATA SSDs — the most common Samsung drives in laptops and desktop upgrades.

970 EVO / EVO Plus

NVMe SSDs widely used as boot drives.

980, 980 Pro, 990 Pro & 990 EVO

Current-generation NVMe SSDs in PCs, laptops, and PlayStation 5 expansions.

T5, T7, T7 Shield & T9

Portable SSDs with built-in hardware encryption.

PM / MZ OEM SSDs

Samsung SSDs installed by laptop makers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo under OEM part numbers.

EVO & PRO microSD cards

Memory cards for phones, drones, and action cameras.

Legacy: Spinpoint hard drives

Older Samsung desktop and laptop hard drives, plus M3 portables (built by Seagate).

Known Samsung failure patterns

Widely reported, publicly documented issues we see in Samsung recoveries. Most units never have these problems — but if yours does, here’s what it means for your data.

980 Pro firmware health degradation

Early 2023, owners of the 980 Pro widely reported rapid health drops and drives switching to read-only mode on firmware 3B2QGXA7. Samsung released firmware 5B2QGXA7 to fix it. Drives that already went read-only still hold data that can often be imaged.

990 Pro health drop

Also in early 2023, the 990 Pro was reported to lose health percentage unusually fast. Samsung addressed it with a firmware update. Update firmware on healthy drives — but image a failing drive before updating.

870 EVO early failures

Some 870 EVO drives from certain production periods were widely reported to develop bad blocks and fail early. Symptoms include errors in SMART, failed copies, and files that won’t open.

Encrypted portable SSDs

T5, T7, and T9 portables encrypt data in hardware. If the drive’s controller fails, the data can only be recovered by getting that controller working again — and you’ll need your password if one was set.

TRIM and deleted files

Like all modern SSDs, Samsung drives use TRIM to erase deleted data in the background. Deleted-file recovery on an SSD is time-sensitive — power it off immediately.

Samsung recovery — common questions

How much does Samsung data recovery cost?+
One flat $1,200 for the Samsung devices we handle — quoted before you ship, with no per-gigabyte fees and no diagnostic charge. You pay $0 if we can't recover your data.
Can you recover an encrypted or password-protected Samsung drive?+
Often yes, but you'll need the password or encryption key. Many Samsung drives use hardware encryption, so a physical recovery only yields readable data when the correct credentials are supplied — have them ready.
My Samsung drive isn't recognized — is the data still there?+
Usually. A drive that isn't detected most often has a controller, firmware, or mechanical fault while the data itself sits intact. Stop using it, don't reformat, and let our cleanroom recover it.
Do I have to visit a location?+
No. We're a mail-in service: confirm online, we email a free prepaid label, you ship your Samsung device, and we return it with your recovered data. You only pay on success.
