SSD Not Showing Up? How to Recover a Dead or Undetected SSD
Solid-state drives don’t click, grind, or whir — they have no moving parts. That’s usually a good thing, but it also means an SSD often gives no warning at all before it fails. One day it simply doesn’t show up: not in your file manager, not in Disk Management, sometimes not even in the BIOS. Here’s how to work through it methodically before assuming the data is lost.
First, rule out the easy stuff
A surprising number of “dead SSD” cases are actually connection problems. Work through these before anything else:
- Try a different cable and port. SATA and USB cables fail. Swap them. For an external SSD, try a different port (ideally directly on the machine, not through a hub).
- Try a different computer. This tells you whether the problem is the drive or the host.
- Check Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS). If the drive appears there — even as “unallocated,” “RAW,” or the wrong size — the controller is alive and your odds are much better.
- Power-cycle the drive. Some SSDs enter a protective locked state after a bad shutdown. A specific power-cycle sequence (power connected, data disconnected, left for ~30 minutes, then rebooted) can bring certain drives back. It doesn’t always work, but it’s safe to try.
If the drive shows up after any of these, copy your data off right away — an SSD that came back once may not come back twice.
Understand how SSDs fail
SSDs fail differently from hard drives, and the failure mode determines what’s recoverable:
- Controller failure. The controller is the brain that maps your files across the flash chips. If it dies, the drive often vanishes completely or shows 0 bytes — even though the data still sits intact in the NAND chips. This is the most common serious SSD failure.
- Firmware corruption. The SSD’s internal firmware gets corrupted and the drive won’t initialize, or bricks itself after a failed firmware update.
- Worn-out NAND. Flash cells wear with use. As a drive nears end of life it may go read-only — which is actually a gift, because you can still copy data off. Don’t ignore a drive that suddenly went read-only; back it up immediately.
- Power damage. A surge can take out the controller or power circuitry outright.
Because the data lives in the NAND rather than the controller, a dead controller doesn’t necessarily mean dead data — but reaching that data is specialized work.
What not to do
- Don’t keep writing to it. If the drive is intermittently accessible, every write risks triggering the SSD’s garbage collection and TRIM, which can permanently erase the free space where deleted files still live.
- Don’t run secure erase, format, or a firmware “repair” utility in the hope it’ll wake up. These can wipe or re-key the drive.
- Don’t ignore encryption. Many SSDs and laptops encrypt by default (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault/APFS on Mac, plus self-encrypting drives). If your data is encrypted, recovery also requires the key or password — locate your BitLocker recovery key or Apple ID credentials now, because without them even a perfect physical recovery yields scrambled data.
How professional SSD recovery works
When the drive won’t cooperate, a lab has a few paths depending on the failure:
- Controller / firmware repair. Engineers repair or work around the failed controller to read the drive normally.
- Chip-off. The NAND chips are physically removed and read on specialized equipment. The catch: modern SSDs scramble, interleave, and wear-level data across many chips, so the raw dump has to be de-obfuscated and reassembled using knowledge of that specific controller’s algorithms. This is genuinely hard, and it’s why SSD recovery can be more involved than hard drive recovery.
The takeaway: SSD data loss is often recoverable, but it’s rarely a DIY job once the drive stops appearing.
The bottom line
Start by ruling out cables, ports, and the host machine — a real share of “dead” SSDs are just bad connections. If the drive truly won’t appear, stop writing to it, find your encryption keys, and don’t run erase or firmware tools. From there it’s a lab job.
