iPhone Stuck on 'Verifying Update'? How to Fix It Safely
You started an iOS update and the screen has said “Verifying Update…” for what feels like forever. Most of the time the phone is fine and the update just needs a nudge. Here’s how to fix it without putting your data at risk.
First, understand which stage you’re in
An over-the-air iOS update runs in stages: download → prepare → verify → install. “Verifying” happens before installation begins — your iPhone is still running its current iOS, and nothing has been rewritten yet. That’s why the early fixes below are low-risk.
Once the screen goes black with an Apple logo and progress bar, the install has started. Don’t interrupt that stage.
Fixes, from gentlest to strongest
1. Give it time — on Wi-Fi and power
Verification checks the update with Apple’s servers. On a slow connection or during a major release day, it can take a while. Connect to strong Wi-Fi, plug into a charger, and give it 30–60 minutes.
2. Lock and wake the phone
Press the Side button to lock the screen, then wake it again. This sometimes kicks a stalled verification forward.
3. Force restart
Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. During the verifying stage, this is generally safe — your current iOS is still intact.
4. Delete the update and download it again
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, find the iOS update in the list, tap it, and choose Delete Update. Then return to Settings → General → Software Update and download it fresh. A corrupted download is a common cause.
5. Free up storage
Updates need several gigabytes of free space to unpack. If storage is nearly full, offload a few apps or videos first.
6. Update with a computer instead
Connect to a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (iTunes / Apple Devices app) and update from there, which avoids the over-the-air process entirely.
If the update left it stuck on the Apple logo
Sometimes an interrupted update leaves the iPhone in a boot loop or stuck on the Apple logo. The fix is recovery mode — and one choice matters enormously:
- Connect the iPhone to a computer.
- Force restart, but keep holding the Side button until you see the recovery-mode screen.
- When your computer asks, choose Update — not Restore.
Update reinstalls iOS and keeps your data. Restore erases the iPhone. If you don’t have a recent iCloud or computer backup, never choose Restore — erased iPhone data is encrypted and cannot be recovered afterward.
If Update fails with an error like 4013, stop and read that guide before trying again.
The bottom line
“Verifying Update” happens before anything is installed, so waiting, force restarting, and re-downloading the update are all safe. If the phone ends up stuck on the Apple logo, use recovery mode and choose Update, never Restore, unless you have a backup.
If a failed update has left your iPhone unbootable with photos you can’t lose, our iPhone recovery service can help — one flat price, nothing to pay unless we recover your data.
