Aura SSDs in older Macs

An Aura SSD in a 2013–2015 Mac that stops being detected can be read independently of the Mac, since these Macs don’t encrypt by hardware — unless FileVault was on, in which case you’ll need your password or recovery key.

SoftRAID volumes

ThunderBay and Gemini units are often configured as RAID 0 or RAID 5 with SoftRAID. Don’t reinitialize or let a rebuild start on a struggling set — recovery is a custom-quoted RAID job.

Enclosure vs drive
