Why hard drives fail in Chicago
For Chicago hard drives, the main threats are basement water, storm surges, and temperature shock. Drives that sat in a flooded basement can carry sewage residue that corrodes the circuit board and contaminates the platters, so they should never be powered on before cleanroom cleaning. Surges during storm season commonly damage a drive's electronics while leaving the platters intact. In winter, a drive moved straight from a frozen car into a warm room can collect condensation. Let cold drives acclimate, and stop using any drive that begins clicking.
Chicago's hard drives do a lot of quiet work in older buildings. Architecture and engineering firms keep drawing archives on office NAS units, trading and accounting shops keep local copies of records on desktop drives, small manufacturers run shop-floor PCs that have not been replaced in a decade, and two-flats and storefronts record cameras to a DVR in the basement or back hall. Many of those machines sit in places that swing from radiator heat in winter to stuffy, humid air in summer, and those swings wear on the lubricant in a drive's spindle bearing and on the circuit board's solder joints over time.
Summer heat is the risk Chicagoans tend to forget. The July 1995 heat wave showed how quickly the city's brick buildings can trap heat, and a NAS or DVR in a top-floor office or a closed-up apartment can run far hotter than its owner realizes. Fan-cooled machines in dusty shop or warehouse spaces get worse every year as their vents clog. When a drive begins clicking, beeping, or disappearing from Windows, shut it down rather than restarting it to see if it comes back, and keep it at normal room temperature until it ships with the free prepaid label.

Hard drive recovery in Chicago — common questions
Our firm's drawing archive is on an old NAS that now shows a failed drive. Should we swap in a new one?+
Not until you know the rest of the array is healthy. Older NAS units often have several drives of the same age, and a rebuild puts heavy stress on all of them at once; a second failure during the rebuild can make the data much harder to recover. Back up anything still readable, or power the unit down and ship all of the drives together. RAID and NAS recoveries are custom-quoted after a free evaluation.
Is it worth recovering a hard drive from an old shop-floor computer at a Chicago-area plant?+
If it holds machine programs, quality records, or production history you cannot recreate, it usually is. Industrial PCs often run older drives for many years, and they tend to fail at the motor or heads after long service in dusty, warm spaces. Do not keep rebooting it. Remove the drive or ship the whole PC with the free label. A single drive is a flat $1,200, charged only if we recover the data.
A hard drive in a top-floor apartment ran through a heat wave and now it is very slow. Is it failing?+
Slow reads after a stretch of heat often mean the drive is struggling to read weak areas of the platters, which is an early sign of head or surface trouble. Copy your most important files first, one time, if it still works, and stop if it starts clicking or freezing. If it no longer mounts, ship it in for evaluation rather than running scanning tools on it.
My hard drive is clicking. Should I keep trying to get it to work?+
No. Clicking usually means the read/write heads are failing, and every power-on risks scratching the platters where your data lives. Unplug it and leave it off until it can be opened in a cleanroom.
How much does hard drive recovery cost in Chicago?+
One flat $1,200 for a single hard drive — internal or external, any brand — quoted before you ship. No diagnostic fee, and you pay $0 if we can't recover your data. Multi-drive RAID and NAS systems are quoted separately after a free evaluation.
How fast can I get my files back?+
Standard turnaround is about 15–20 business days from arrival. If it's urgent, expedited (2–4 business days) and emergency (24–48 hours) handling are available on request. Shipping from Chicago usually adds only a day or two each way.
