Why hard drives fail in Raleigh

Raleigh hard drives often fail during or after storms: an ice storm or hurricane that cuts power mid-write, lightning that sends a surge through the line, or a long outage followed by an unstable restoration. That can damage a drive's electronics, corrupt its data, or leave heads stuck. Lab and research drives also tend to run hard for years. If a drive clicks, will not spin, or is not recognized, stop using it. Data on the platters is usually recoverable in a cleanroom if the drive has not been run to destruction.

Raleigh and the wider Research Triangle run on data, and much of it still passes through spinning drives. University and contract research groups capture instrument output on lab workstations, biotech teams move large datasets on external drives, state government employees keep files on home computers, and software startups run a NAS in a shared office. Many of those drives operate around the clock or sit on a desk where they are written to all day. The hours add up, and drives purchased together in a lab or office tend to reach the end of their working life at roughly the same time.

Humidity is the quieter threat in central North Carolina. After a hurricane remnant or a long summer outage, homes and offices can sit without air conditioning for days, and damp air settles on circuit boards and connectors even if no water ever touches the drive. When power returns, a drive that clicks, spins up and down repeatedly, or is not detected should be shut off at once rather than tested again. Do not let a NAS start a rebuild. Label each drive, request a free prepaid label, and ship it in padding for cleanroom recovery.

Hard drive recovery in Raleigh — common questions

Our house stayed humid for days after a hurricane knocked out power. Can moisture affect a drive that was never wet?+
It can. Prolonged humidity can lead to condensation and corrosion on a drive's circuit board and connectors, especially if the drive was cold and the air warm. That can cause failure even with no flooding. If the drive does not behave normally once powered, stop and ship it with the free prepaid label. The data is usually still on the platters.
One drive in our startup's RAID 5 NAS failed during a summer storm. What should we do?+
If the array is still running in a degraded state, back up the most critical files immediately, then decide calmly about a rebuild. If a second drive shows errors, or the NAS no longer recognizes the volume, shut it down and do not reinitialize anything. NAS and RAID recoveries are custom-quoted after a free evaluation, and you pay only if we recover your data.
Our lab instrument computer runs old software. Do you need that software to recover the files?+
No. Engineers recover the files directly from the drive, so the instrument software does not need to run. You will still need that software, or a compatible viewer, to open proprietary data formats afterward, so keep the installer and license information if you have them. Send just the drive with the free prepaid label if it can be removed safely.
My hard drive is clicking. Should I keep trying to get it to work?+
No. Clicking usually means the read/write heads are failing, and every power-on risks scratching the platters where your data lives. Unplug it and leave it off until it can be opened in a cleanroom.
How much does hard drive recovery cost in Raleigh?+
One flat $1,200 for a single hard drive — internal or external, any brand — quoted before you ship. No diagnostic fee, and you pay $0 if we can't recover your data. Multi-drive RAID and NAS systems are quoted separately after a free evaluation.
How fast can I get my files back?+
Standard turnaround is about 15–20 business days from arrival. If it's urgent, expedited (2–4 business days) and emergency (24–48 hours) handling are available on request. Shipping from Raleigh usually adds only a day or two each way.
