Database Recovery you can trust

A corrupted or inaccessible database can halt a business. We recover and repair databases — from a single corrupt file to one trapped on a failed array — priced per case after a free evaluation.

About database recovery

Databases store data in fixed-size pages inside a few large files. SQL Server uses an MDF data file, optional NDF files, and an LDF transaction log. MySQL's InnoDB engine keeps tables in a shared ibdata file or per-table .ibd files alongside redo logs, and PostgreSQL stores tables as many files in a data directory with a write-ahead log. The engine relies on the data files and logs agreeing with each other, which is what lets it recover cleanly after an ordinary crash.

Corruption happens when that agreement breaks. A failing drive returns bad sectors inside pages, a RAID or storage fault writes stale data, a power loss interrupts writes the storage hadn't finished, or a log file is lost or deleted. The database may then refuse to start, be marked suspect, or throw errors on specific tables. Built-in repair options can restore consistency by discarding damaged pages, which can mean losing rows permanently.

Page-level recovery aims to keep as much of that data as possible. By reading the damaged files directly, intact pages, tables, and rows can often be extracted even when the engine won't open the database, then loaded into a clean, consistent copy. How much comes back depends on how many pages are damaged and whether the logs survive.

What we recover

  • ✓SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL
  • ✓Microsoft Access databases
  • ✓Exchange (EDB) mail stores
  • ✓Databases from failed drives and RAID arrays

Common failures we handle

  • •Corrupted, suspect, or detached database
  • •A failed drive or RAID holding the database
  • •Accidental deletion or a dropped table
  • •A failed migration, restore, or update

Before you send it in: what not to do

  • ✕Don't run repairs with data-loss options, such as SQL Server's REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS, on your only copy — they can permanently delete damaged pages and rows.
  • ✕Don't delete or rebuild the transaction log to bring the database online — the log may hold committed changes not yet written to the data files.
  • ✕Don't restore a backup over the damaged database — restoring overwrites files that may hold newer data than the backup.
  • ✕Don't let applications keep writing to a database that is reporting errors — new writes can spread corruption and reuse pages holding recoverable data.
  • ✕Don't detach a suspect database or move its files without copying them first — a damaged database may not reattach cleanly.

How we recover it

1

Evaluate storage and engine

During the free evaluation we identify the database engine and version and the condition of the underlying drives or array, recovering the storage first if it has failed.

2

Work from secure copies

All data and log files are copied before analysis, so no repair is ever attempted on your only copy.

3

Analyze pages and logs

We check page structures for damage and determine whether the transaction or redo logs can be used to bring the data to a consistent point.

4

Extract and rebuild

Intact schema and rows are extracted from the damaged files and loaded into a new database, which is then checked for consistency.

5

Report and deliver

We tell you which tables or records were affected and deliver the recovered database in a format your systems can use.

Database Recovery — common questions

How much does database recovery cost?+
Multi-drive cases are quoted per job after a free evaluation — the price depends on the configuration, the failure, and the work involved. There's no charge for the evaluation, and you pay nothing unless we recover your data.
Our database is marked suspect or won't start. What should we do first?+
Stop writing to it and make copies of all data and log files, ideally with the database service stopped. Note the engine version and any error messages. Those files and details are what recovery works from, so preserving them as they are matters more than trying further fixes.
Can you recover a dropped table or deleted records?+
Sometimes. Deleted rows and dropped tables can remain in the data file's free pages until the engine reuses that space, and the logs may also hold traces of them. The sooner writes stop, the better the chances.
In what format do you return recovered databases?+
Usually as database files for the same engine and version, or as script or export files that can be imported into a fresh database. We can agree on what works best for your environment during the free evaluation.
Is my data still recoverable?+
In most cases, yes. A device that won't boot or mount usually has a hardware fault while the data itself is intact. The key is to stop using it — don't reformat, rebuild, or keep powering it on — and let our cleanroom handle it.
How do I send in a Database system?+
Start online for a free evaluation and we'll arrange secure, insured shipping. Your system is assessed in our cleanroom, you approve a fixed quote before any work, and you only pay on a successful recovery.
How long does it take?+
Most cases are evaluated within a couple of business days of arrival, with a turnaround estimate provided alongside your quote. Emergency service is available when time is critical.
