About photo recovery

Digital photos come in a few main forms. JPEG and HEIC are compressed formats produced by phones and most cameras, with HEIC the default on recent iPhones. RAW files such as CR3, NEF, ARW, and DNG hold unprocessed sensor data and are much larger. Each format has recognizable internal structures, and that structure is what lets photos be identified and recovered even when the file system that tracked them is damaged or gone.

Memory cards usually use FAT32 or exFAT, simple file systems where deleting or quick-formatting often removes only the index, leaving image data in place until new photos overwrite it. Recovery gets harder when files are fragmented, meaning a photo is stored in several separate pieces. That happens more on nearly full cards, after deleting and reshooting, and on computer drives. Without file system records, fragmented photos can come back partly damaged, with grey or shifted areas.

Phones and SSDs are a different case. Modern phones encrypt their storage, and SSDs often erase deleted data quickly through a feature called TRIM, so photos deleted from these devices are frequently unrecoverable even when the hardware works. When a phone or SSD has failed rather than been wiped, the outlook is often much better.

What we recover

  • ✓JPEG, HEIC, PNG, and RAW camera files
  • ✓Entire photo libraries (Apple Photos, Lightroom)
  • ✓Deleted or formatted photos
  • ✓Photos from cards, phones, drives, and SSDs

Common failures we handle

  • •Memory card corrupted or "needs formatting"
  • •Accidentally deleted or formatted photos
  • •Phone that won’t turn on
  • •Failed drive holding a photo library

Before you send it in: what not to do

  • ✕Don't keep shooting on a card that has lost photos — every new picture can overwrite the ones you are trying to get back.
  • ✕Don't format the card in the camera or computer to make it usable again — formatting replaces the file system, and some full formats overwrite the whole card.
  • ✕Don't run recovery apps that save results back onto the same card or drive — writing to the source can overwrite the very photos being recovered.
  • ✕Don't run your photo app's library repair over and over to find missing pictures — repairs rewrite the library database that links your photos together.
  • ✕Don't bend, cut, or pry open a broken memory card — many microSD cards are a single sealed package, and physical damage can destroy the memory inside.

How we recover it

1

Assess the media

We identify where the photos lived, whether a card, phone, hard drive, or SSD, and what happened, such as deletion, formatting, or physical failure.

2

Make a full image

We read the entire card or drive into a secure image, repairing physical faults first if the media can't be read normally.

3

Rebuild from the file system

Where file system records survive, we recover photos with their original names, folders, and dates, including Apple Photos and Lightroom libraries.

4

Search by file structure

For formatted or badly damaged media, we scan the raw image for photo structures and reassemble fragmented files where possible.

5

Check and return

We review recovered images for damage, then return them sorted on a secure return drive.

Photo Recovery — common questions

How much does photo recovery cost?+
One flat $1,200, quoted before you ship — no per-gigabyte fees and no diagnostic charge. You pay $0 if we can't recover your data.
Can you recover photos from a formatted memory card?+
Often, if the card was quick-formatted and little has been written since. A quick format usually replaces only the file system and leaves image data in place. Some cameras and computer options perform a full format that overwrites the card, and in that case recovery is usually not possible.
Will recovered photos keep their original names and folders?+
When the file system records survive, yes. When photos have to be found by searching the raw data, they usually come back with generic names, but the date and camera information stored inside each file, called EXIF data, is often intact and can be used to sort them.
Can you recover RAW files as well as JPEGs?+
Yes. Common RAW formats from the major camera makers are recovered alongside JPEG and HEIC. Because RAW files are large, they are more likely to be fragmented, and some may come back incomplete, so we check each one for damage.
Is my data still recoverable?+
In most cases, yes. A device that won't boot or mount usually has a hardware fault while the data itself is intact. The key is to stop using it — don't reformat, rebuild, or keep powering it on — and let our cleanroom handle it.
Do I have to visit a location?+
No. We're mail-in: confirm online, we email a free prepaid label, you ship the device, and we return it with your recovered data. You only pay on success.
How long does it take?+
Most single-device cases finish in about 15–20 business days from arrival, with shipping adding only a day or two on each end.
