About video & camera recovery

Video files are large, and that changes how they get lost. A single clip can run to many gigabytes, so on a card or drive it is often stored in many fragments. Most cameras record into container formats such as MP4 or MOV, where the audio and video data sits in one part of the file and an index, often called the moov atom, describes where every frame is. Without that index, players generally can't open the file at all, even if the footage itself is intact.

Many cameras write that index only when recording stops. If the battery dies, the card is pulled, or the camera crashes mid-record, the footage may be on the card while the file is unplayable. Repair is sometimes possible by rebuilding the index with the help of a healthy reference clip from the same camera and settings. Other formats, such as AVCHD folder structures, RAW video, and long recordings split into multiple chapter files, each need their own handling.

Formatting a card and then recording over it is the hardest case. New footage overwrites old footage, and the overwritten portions cannot be brought back. Clips that were only partly overwritten can sometimes be recovered up to the point where new data begins, which is why it matters to stop using the card as soon as you notice footage is missing.

What we recover

  • ✓MP4, MOV, AVCHD, and RAW video
  • ✓Footage from SD, CFexpress, and XQD cards
  • ✓Drone, action-cam, and DSLR/mirrorless media
  • ✓Project files from editing drives

Common failures we handle

  • •Card corrupted mid-record
  • •Card removed before the file finished writing
  • •Accidentally formatted card
  • •Editing drive that failed or won’t mount

Before you send it in: what not to do

  • ✕Don't keep recording on a card after footage goes missing — video files are large and overwrite old data quickly.
  • ✕Don't format the card in-camera to clear an error — formatting replaces the file system, and some cameras overwrite more than that.
  • ✕Don't run repair tools directly on your original clips — work on copies, because a failed repair can damage the header data a proper rebuild needs.
  • ✕Don't remove a card or unplug a drive while it is still writing — interrupted writes are one of the most common reasons a clip loses its index.
  • ✕Don't delete the other clips from the same shoot — a healthy clip recorded with the same camera and settings can help rebuild a damaged one.

How we recover it

1

Image the media

We make a complete copy of the card or drive, repairing physical or controller faults first when the media won't read.

2

Map the footage

We analyze the file system and raw data to locate clips and their fragments, using camera-specific structures to work out which pieces belong together.

3

Reassemble and repair

Fragmented clips are rebuilt in order, and missing or damaged headers and indexes are reconstructed, often with the help of a reference clip from the same camera.

4

Test playback and return

We test recovered clips for playback, note any that are incomplete, and return them on a secure return drive.

Video & Camera Recovery — common questions

How much does video & camera recovery cost?+
One flat $1,200, quoted before you ship — no per-gigabyte fees and no diagnostic charge. You pay $0 if we can't recover your data.
My camera died mid-recording and the clip won't play. Can it be fixed?+
Often, yes. Usually the video data was written but the index at the end of the file wasn't. If you can include a short, playable clip recorded on the same camera with the same resolution and frame-rate settings, it gives us a reference for rebuilding the damaged file.
Can you recover footage from drones and action cameras?+
Usually, yes. These devices typically record MP4 or MOV files to microSD cards, and the same methods apply. Many split long recordings into several chapter files, which we keep together and in the right order.
Can you recover an editing drive with my projects on it?+
Yes. Editing drives usually hold original camera media, project files, and cache or proxy files. Tell us which projects matter most, since the original media and project files are usually what you need to reopen an edit, while caches can be regenerated.
Is my data still recoverable?+
In most cases, yes. A device that won't boot or mount usually has a hardware fault while the data itself is intact. The key is to stop using it — don't reformat, rebuild, or keep powering it on — and let our cleanroom handle it.
Do I have to visit a location?+
No. We're mail-in: confirm online, we email a free prepaid label, you ship the device, and we return it with your recovered data. You only pay on success.
How long does it take?+
Most single-device cases finish in about 15–20 business days from arrival, with shipping adding only a day or two on each end.
